In winter, without any of the bustle of summer, it is enchanted by snow-covered hiking trails, breathtaking winter panoramas, the opportunity to observe animals up close, and traditional winter festivals with their own charm. To help you really experience the charm of Nida in winter, we've put together a selection of places to visit, recommendations and tips on what to do in Nida in winter.
Briefly
4 places in and around Nida that many people don't visit
Nida has several famous natural attractions, but many holidaymakers pass by and do not visit these exceptional places. And with good reason! Here are a few places that we particularly recommend visiting in Nida in the winter - you'll feel the grandeur of nature, see spectacular panoramas of snow-capped dunes and hills and enjoy the tranquillity.
The Vececrugo Cluster
A place that will amaze you with its views and the diversity of nature that surrounds it. It is the highest dune in the Curonian Spit - more than 67 metres high - so there is definitely something to see from the top when you climb it. The unique nature of the place is also fascinating: at the top there is a small platform from which you can see the sea, the lagoon, the panorama of Cape Bulvikis, the surrounding mountain pines, and the sounds of the Baltic Sea. An unusual name, isn't it? In the past, a tavern stood at the foot of this dune, which is probably the reason for the name: the Curonian words 'vece' (old) and 'kruogs' (tavern) gave the dune its name Vecekrugs.

Preila kopa
From the 53-metre-high dune, you will see many different views: the Baltic Sea and the lagoon coast, Preila Cape and the bay, Cape Vente is clearly visible across the lagoon, and even Cape Grobstov, which is part of the Kaliningrad region, can be seen looking further south. It is an interesting and contrasting place - for example, in winter the frost-covered dunes create a unique contrast with the dark peaks of the pine forests. The few crooked pine trees at the top of the dune also add to the interest, and you will definitely want to capture them. It's a place to come for walks and views at any time of the year.

Scorpio cluster
Another place in Nida that impresses not only with its natural views, but also with its remoteness (even in the high season, it's much more remote and quiet) - you'll most likely come here in winter and enjoy slow walks and nature watching, and you won't meet a single person around. Climb up this more than 50-metre-high dune and you'll see panoramas of the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon. Tip: If you are visiting Nida on a sunny day, make sure you visit this place at sunset.
Mount Avino
The Avikalnis viewpoint in Nida also offers stunning winter horizons - from the 35.8 metre high observation deck you can see the Dead Dunes, the sea, the Curonian Lagoon coastline and fragments of the Juodkrante Spit. When you arrive at Avikalnis, you will have the opportunity to enjoy the scenery, feel the peace of nature, sit on a bench and admire the views.

"Stintapūkis" in Nida
This event, which has been taking place in Nida during the winter for more than a decade, marks the start of the sturgeon fishing season. The main highlight of the celebration is the stint, a cucumber-scented fish caught in the Curonian Lagoon, which is fished in a recreation of the old "bumbing" tradition.
"Stintapūkis takes place in all the settlements of the Curonian Spit, but the main events take place in Nida in February. Guests are invited to taste fried and smoked sturgeon, fish soup and other fish dishes. In addition to sturgeon tasting, there are sports competitions, relay races, games and various educational activities. The Nida Blizgė ice fishing competition is an integral part of the event. Throughout the weekend, Nida is buzzing with craft fairs.

Images of "icy" Nida
Perhaps in the last few years, in January-February, you may have seen on social media images of the "ice sculpture gallery" formed by nature in Nida in winter. Even if the low minus temperatures and the stronger easterly winds turn the objects on the shore of the lagoon - benches, trees, signs - into ice sculptures, they become icy. This phenomenon has been recurring in January or February in recent years. The pictures are certainly eye-catching, but we are not going to mislead you by saying that if you can see these works of nature in person, you will see much more spectacular images.
Ice fishing in Nida
A seemingly simple, but somehow addictive and interesting activity - watching fishermen on the lagoon shore in Nida in winter. In Neringa, the tradition of "bumbing" is still widely preserved and maintained. This fishing method dates back to 1915 and is still in use today: a spruce or pine board is dropped into a 50 x 50 cm net into a 50 x 50 cm net so that the end of the board remains above the ice and the fisherman, sitting on a stool, is able to use a wooden stick to pound the board with the end of the board, sometimes to the rhythmic accompaniment of the words 'Stinta pūkis, stinta pūkis'.
The sound of a crashing sound under the ice startles the sturgeon, which then fall straight into the nets to escape the sound. How interesting is that? From the shore, it is interesting to observe the fishermen interacting, to listen to the muffled, rhythmic "boom". And if you arrive after dark, you will be greeted by an even more interesting sight: the ice is lit up with small lights, which the fishermen are trying to shine on, and the light, muffled 'boom' can be heard. So for an evening stroll in Nida in winter, you can choose the lagoon shore for a unique view.
Bird watching in Nida
We are seeing more and more people interested in nature, birdwatching and photography - Nida is ideal for this peaceful nature watching. The spit is a migratory route, and the narrowness of the spit means that thousands of birds are concentrated in the spit like a funnel, making it the perfect place for bird watching. If you want to see as many winged birds as possible, choose the higher ground in Nida in winter - the Parnidis Dune or the coast and the seaside - where you will see different species of birds.
For even more convenient birdwatching, there are six birdwatching towers from Nida to Pervalka. All of them are located in the picturesque headlands (Bulvikis, Ožkai, Pervalka, Žirgų) and bays (Bulvikis, Karvaičiai) of the spit.
"Is birdwatching only possible in autumn?" - No, there's something to see in all seasons. Of course, migration is much more intense in autumn, but winter is also full of life. The forests and water bodies are teeming with life all year round, and the sounds of different birds reach our ears. The Curonian Spit is a bird lover's paradise. For those who have not tried this peaceful activity, we recommend you do. You'll be amazed at how many interesting things happen in nature and how watching nature helps you relax.
Museums in Nida
If you are visiting Nida in winter and the weather is not so favourable for walks and nature exploration, go on a historical and cultural tour of Nida. Nida has several museums open throughout the year, which are constantly being updated, with new exhibits and interactive material. Visiting them is the best way to learn about the culture, heritage and history of the Curonian Spit. Which museums in Nida are worth visiting?
Thomas Mann Cultural Centre
It is probably one of the most popular museums in Nida, and well worth visiting at least once. The museum is housed in the house of the writer Thomas Mann, which is located on the shore of the lagoon, close to the centre of Nida. The first thing that will impress you is the setting of the museum: the terrace overlooks the Curonian Lagoon, and there is a quiet environment where you can sit down and enjoy the view. In the museum itself, we recommend using the free audioguide, which gives an interesting insight into Thomas Mann's life, not only about his life, but also about life in the Curonian Spit at the time. You can also watch the documentary film shown here and browse through old photographs.

Mizgiriri Amber Museum
We recommend a visit to this amber museum in Nida, where the whole story of amber is told in an interesting and picturesque way - you will not only hear it, but you will also see it, touch it, smell it. The museum is full of rare ambers and works of art, and the stories are complemented by a virtual narrative on panoramic screens. A visit here is therefore not only an informative experience, but also an artistic one, presented through multimedia images. You will learn the legend about the formation of amber, see a documentary reconstruction of the amber forest, and hear a poetic story about the Curonian Spit based on real facts. An informative and interesting time that will interest both children and adults.

Nida fisherman's ethnographic homestead
The museum is an authentic fisherman's house, surrounded by the everyday objects of an ordinary fisherman from the 19th and 20th century. You will therefore have the opportunity to see authentic furniture, crockery and other items used on the farm, as well as fishing implements. The exhibitions are presented in such a way that you can really step back in time and experience the old life of the Curonian Spit, using video projections to recreate the life that was lived here. There is also a film in the old Curonian language, and the guides share stories in Curonian too - have you ever heard it? There are 2 authentic fishing boats parked next to the homestead, and the homestead is located on the shores of the rippling lagoon. We especially recommend coming here with children - not only will young visitors be interested in the museum's exhibitions, but there are separate activities for children.

Curonian Spit History Museum

How and when was this region "discovered" by the European cultural elite? These and other stories are revealed by the Curonian Spit History Museum, which introduces the cultural heritage of the people who lived and live here. A small but cosy space with interesting exhibitions that will take you back to Stone Age settlements.
